In 2004, the Co-operative Housing Federation of Toronto (CHFT) launched the CHFT Diversity Scholarship Program.

The program is for people living in CHFT member housing co-ops.  An important element of the scholarship is the strong commitment to diversity shown by the applicants in their communities.  Students are awarded their scholarships largely based on their community involvement in their schools, co-op communities and in a variety of community based organizations. To date people from over 60 co-ops have won scholarships.

The CHFT Diversity Scholarship Program has two community partners, Credit Canada and the YMCA.  Both these community partners offer additional services to successful scholarship students.  Credit Canada provides workshops on financial planning and budgeting.  YMCA helps students with life skills training, job interview preparation and developing strategies to secure summer employment.

In 2007, CHFT in partnership with the Peel-Halton Co-operative Housing Federation (PHCHF), began to award diversity scholarships. The PHCHF awards a scholarship each year at a ceremony in the spring. This year CHFT will also work in partnership with the Golden Horseshoe Co-operative Housing Federation to introduce a new scholarship in the Hamilton and Niagara area.  . CHFT will also work with the Co-operative Housing Federation of British Columbia to introduce a new scholarship.

CHFT Diversity Scholarship recipients have graduated from the following schools:

Centennial College Ryerson University
George Brown College Seneca College
Guelph University Trent University
McMaster University University of Toronto
Queen’s University Wilfrid Laurier University
  York University

CHFT awards the Dexter Johnston Scholarship recognizing a young person who has shown exceptional leadership in their school and community.

We also award the Randy Padmore Scholarship. This scholarship recognizes an individual who takes an active role in mentoring young people.

The CHFT Diversity Scholarship Program supports students to complete their first 4 years of post secondary education.  Five students have achieved a second degree after completing their undergraduate program. These second degrees were awarded by York, University of Toronto, Queen’s and Oxford University in England. Three more students are returning to school this fall for post graduate studies.Recently, one of the students was accepted into a PhD program at Columbia University in New York.

The CHFT Diversity Scholarship Event was held on June 16, 2011 at the St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts. At this event we awarded 27 scholarships.  New scholarship winners were joined by past winners who are currently part of our program. The event provided an opportunity for close to 400 people to celebrate the accomplishments of the scholarship winners.
