To relieve poverty by assisting persons of low
income to obtain affordable housing and other necessities; and
To carry on educational programs in order to increase
knowledge respecting the operation and management of social housing
through research, educational programs and publication and distribution
of books, papers, reports and periodicals.
Chronology
1998
CHFT Charitable Fund was launched and the Training and Employment
Program was piloted. The Training and Employment Program provides
co-op residents and other members of the community with the skills
they need to get jobs as administrators, clerks, receptionists and
customer service representatives.
1999
The CHFT Computer Centre opened its doors with individual work stations
and Internet access for all students. The Centre also provides extensive
help with job searches.
2000
Strong Communities Campaign was launched to help tenants convert
their housing to non-profit co-operatives.
The Here To Stay Fund was launched to provide
credit counselling and loans for people who are up to month in arrears.
2001
The number of employers who hired graduates from the Training and
Employment Program surpassed 100.
2002
Over $20,000 in loans was distributed through the Here To Stay Fund.
Basic co-op housing information was translated into 8 languages
and made available on the CHFT website.
Strong Communities Campaign contributed over $114,000
to cover the costs of converting the Alexandra Park public housing
project into the Atkinson Housing Co-operative.
CHFT Charitable Fund raised money for the Paloma
Housing Co-operative in Vancouver, British Columbia after it was
damaged in a fire.
2003
After years of hard work the residents of Alexandra Park took over
the management of their public housing project. It became the Atkinson
Housing Co-operative. On April 1, 2003, the rainbow flag, the international
symbol of co-operation, was raised above the co-op’s central
building.
CHFT Charitable Fund raised money for the Forty-Third
Street Housing Co-operative after it suffers extensive damage due
to a fire.
2004
The Investing in Diversity Scholarships provided $24,000 in scholarships
and bursaries to nine young people in partnership with Scadding
Court Community Centre.
CHFT Charitable Fund, in partnership with Metro
Credit Union funded the snack program in 10 Parenting and Family
Literacy Centres across the city. This partnership provided $10,000
of funding in this school year.
CHFT Charitable Fund raised money for the Chord
Housing Co-operative after 17 units on the third floor of the co-op
were destroyed in a devastating fire.
Two Co-op Housing Bookstore publications were
recorded on audio tape - The Board of Directors and Words. . . Words.

2005
CHFT Charitable Fund acted as a charitable host for the following
projects:
The Campaign for a new basketball court at Atkinson
Housing Co-operative
The Green Roof Project at Hugh Garner Housing
Co-operative. This project’s goal is to reduce greenhouse
emissions by 20 tonnes a year.
Various initiatives for The Friends of Ben which
raises money to support a young boy who was diagnosed with a rare
form of cancer just before he was to start school.
