Samira Abdulatif

Atkinson Housing Co-operative Inc.

After her graduation from Eastern Commerce Collegiate Institute, Samira began studying at Ryerson in 2006, but she had to slow down because of an accident. She now plans to return to Ryerson and complete her degree in social work. In her community, she has assisted the program leader in the Dexter Johnson Community Basketball Program, and she helps younger children with homework at Alexandra Park Community Centre. In 2007, at age 20, Samira was one of the five young people elected to the board of Atkinson Co-op, where she is still a director.

 

Ragaa Abdulcadir

Upwood Park/Salvador del Mundo Co-operative Homes Inc.

Ragaa will be continuing in the Bachelor of Health Management program at York University. She also volunteers at Dixon Community Services in the Homework Club. Earlier she worked in community outreach and the Summer Youth Employment Program at Dixon. As a volunteer at Canadian Blood Services, she organized a drive to find a bone-marrow match for a patient with cancer, and for the Somali Youth Association of Toronto, she helped to organize youth recognition awards. Ragaa graduated from Scarlett Heights Entrepreneurial Academy.

 

Sonia Aguilar Valencia

La Paz Co-operative Homes Inc.

After she graduated from Humberside Collegiate Institute, Sonia took further courses at Western Technical Commercial School. There she contributed to the school newspaper. She has worked and volunteered in the office of her prosthetic ocularist, helping others who have visual impairment. Sonia has also participated in her co-op’s Supplementary Food Program. She will continue in the Bachelor of Arts program at the University of Toronto that she began in 2008.

 

Abdirashid Aidid

Eamon Park Housing Co-operative

Abdi will graduate from Vaughan Secondary School. He says the school newspaper, The Scribbler, became his reason for going to school. As its editor-in-chief, he expanded its staff to 45 writers, editors, and artists and strengthened its profile in the school and the community. He has also volunteered as a Youth Action Councillor with the Canadian Red Cross, facilitating and participating in seminars on anti-racism, anti-bullying and other topics. In addition, Abdi

volunteers for the Ogaden Somali Community Association of Ontario. He plans to attend the University of Toronto.

 

Crystal Brightly

Atkinson Housing Co-operative Inc.

Crystal attended Harbord Collegiate Institute before graduating from Central Technical School. At the Alexandra Park Community Centre, where she took the Leader-in-Training program, she encouraged girls to join the J-Hood Summer Basketball League and became their coach. She helped to create the Young Women’s Program at Alexandra Park for girls aged 10-12 and is a program facilitator there, running workshops and taking girls on trips. She plans to attend George Brown College or Ryerson.

 

Nadia Brooks

Bleecker Street Co-operative Homes Inc.

Nadia graduated from high school in 2002 and entered York University as a mature student in 2006. She volunteers at Bloorview School Authority with children who have physical, intellectual, and communication disabilities. Earlier she volunteered at the Bleecker Street summer camp, Dixon Hall summer camps, and a Sunday School. She is enrolled in the concurrent program at York and will graduate with both a Bachelor of Arts degree and a Bachelor of Education degree. Nadia will pursue a career in teaching.

 

Christina R. Darby

Stanley Knowles Housing Co-op

An Honour Roll student at St. Clement’s School, Christina excelled in drawing, painting, and photography. She brought her artistic talents to her volunteering in the after-school arts and activities program at St. Clement’s, and to her mother’s campaign for municipal office. Through the Horizons Program for inner-city schools, she became a peer tutor and mentor for children in Grades 2 to 4 at Stanley Public School, near Jane and Sheppard. Christina plans to attend University of Toronto, Mc Gill, Western, or Guelph.

 

Domanique Grant

Atkinson Housing Co-operative Inc.

Domanique will continue studying psychology and theatre at York University. At Northern Secondary School, she formed a Black History Month committee and was its president for two years. She staged and choreographed the dance portion of the Black History Month assembly. Domanique’s involvement in performing arts continued in her community, where she performed in plays and other events with themes of resistance against gun violence, racism, stereotyping, and violence against women. She also teaches leadership and life skills at a Yonge Street Mission girls’ club in Regent Park.

 

Anika Hazra

Kimroy Grove Co-operative Homes

Anika is graduating from Agincourt Collegiate Institute, where she has been a mentor, a prefect, and a representative on the Volunteer Council. She served as senior editor of the school newspaper and faculty editor of the yearbook. She was also a delegate to Model UN, participating in conferences with students from other schools. Anika has volunteered as a cashier at a hospital gift shop and a tour guide at the Scarborough Historical Museum. She plans to attend Carleton University.

 

Dahir Mohamed

Harry Sherman Crowe Housing Co-operative

Dahir is graduating from C.W. Jefferys Collegiate Institute. He was involved in several volunteer activities at Dixon Community Services in Etobicoke: coordinating tutoring and extracurricular activities for children; organizing art, music, and sports programs for teenagers; providing office support; and helping people who have trouble speaking or writing English. He plans to attend Ryerson University.

 

Nasriin Mohamed

Atkinson Housing Co-operative Inc.

At Jarvis Collegiate Institute, Nasriin has been vice-president of the Muslim Students Association for two years and a Peer Leader for three years. As a Peer Leader she was involved in a project to build a school in Sierra Leone. On weekends she is a volunteer teacher’s assistant in the Somali Languages Program at Ryerson Community Public School. She also organizes events for the Young Muslimahz program at Scadding Court Community Centre. Nasriin plans to attend the University of Toronto.

 

Nneka Myers

Muriel Collins Housing Co-operative

Nneka has been an Honour Roll student at Jarvis Collegiate Institute. A winner of several awards in visual arts, she has also been a designer, model, and choreographer for the school fashion show. She has been planning a mural at Jarvis to reflect the school’s history, multiculturalism, school spirit, and community contributions. Her volunteer work includes fundraising for Epilepsy Toronto and helping in the kindergarten and library at Church Street Public School. Nneka plans to attend Sheridan College.

 

Claudianna Sarjue

Atkinson Housing Co-operative Inc.

Claudianna is graduating from Jarvis Collegiate Institute, where she is secretary of the Student Government and a cafeteria volunteer. She has also been an executive member of  Empowered Student Partnership, promoting safety and working against crime and violence. At Alexandra Park Community Centre, she completed the Leader-in-Training program and volunteers in the “After 4” homework program. She helps with her community’s Canada Day celebrations. Claudianna plans to attend York University.

 

Alicia Sayles

Bleecker Street Co-operative Homes Inc.

Alicia will go into third year at York University in the fall, taking humanities and communication studies. At Jarvis Collegiate Institute, she was president of the Jarvis Ujaama Club for two years and sang with the school choir at special assemblies. She has volunteered in many co-op activities including the Bleecker Street newsletter, social events, child care, and community clean-up days. Alicia has also led activities for preschoolers at Jarvis Street Baptist Church.

 

Harry Timla

Campden Green Co-operative Homes Inc.

Harry is graduating from Pope John Paul II Catholic Secondary School. For the past two years he has volunteered with the law firm Blake, Cassels & Graydon, organizing activities and supervision for children’s events and helping with charity fundraisers. He has also volunteered in member orientation at the Scarborough YMCA, and he helps with events of the St. Thomas More Church Youth Group, participating in fundraising and preparing meals for disadavantaged people. He plans to attend Ryerson University.

 

Samantha Timla

Campden Green Co-operative Homes Inc.

Samantha will continue in children’s studies at York University. She graduated in 2008 from Pope John Paul II Catholic Secondary School, where she tutored younger students. She worked first as a volunteer, then as an employee, developing and supervising children’s activities at Broadlands Community Centre. She volunteers as a literacy reading buddy at Shoreham Public School.

 

Tiffany Williams

Harry Sherman Crowe Housing Co-operative

Tiffany is graduating from Dante Alighieri Academy. She has been participating in the Ill Skillz program, in which students from across the city meet and express themselves through dance and poetry. At Fairbank Community Centre, she completed the Counsellor-in-Training program and helped with children’s activities. Tiffany has also taken part in weekly parish activities at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church. She plans to attend Humber College and become a police officer.

Dorran M. Grant

Atkinson Housing Co-operative Inc.

Dorran began his community involvement when approached by Atkinson’s Youth Outreach Team, which promotes civic engagement and got young people interested in the co-op elections. At age 19, he was one of five young people elected to the co-op board in 2007, and he is now in his second term as secretary. Dorran also teaches basketball in the Dexter Johnson basketball skill development program. He graduated from Burnhamthorpe Collegiate Institute and plans to attend Centennial College.

 

Nada T. Le

Atkinson Housing Co-operative Inc.

Nada graduated from Central Commerce Collegiate, where she participated in Student Council, sports, fundraisers, the breakfast program, and other activities while maintaining an A average. She was a key coordinator for an outreach project to introduce Grade 8 students to the high school environment. At Alexandra Park Community Centre she volunteers at the Young Women’s Program, and she is helping to create a mentoring program for younger children. Nada plans to attend Ryerson University.

Sasha Moody

Scarborough Heights Co-operative Homes Inc.

 

Since her graduation from high school in 1996, Sasha has acquired a wide range of skills in youth counselling, case management, and health services. She has been a camp counsellor for the African Expression Summer Camp and a volunteer at the Eva’s Phoenix shelter. Currently she coordinates youth programs at the North West Scarborough Youth Centre. Sasha plans to attend a nursing program at Sheridan College .

 

 

Natasha Mornix

Grace Hartman Housing Co-operative Inc.

 

Natasha graduated from high school in 1998 and earned a Child and Youth Worker diploma from Centennial College in 2003. At her co-op, she helps with office tasks and community events. She took part in youth programs and volunteered for 10 years at the Warden Woods Community Centre, and she volunteered in the Galloway after-school program of East Metro Youth Services. Natasha is a Child and Youth Worker for York Region District School Board. She plans to attend Centennial College General Arts program.
